What Is FPV Drone Racing?

FPV (First-Person View) drone racing puts you in the cockpit of a racing drone — via a headset or monitor — flying through gates and obstacles at speeds up to 100+ mph. Sim racing for drones uses software like Velocidrone, Liftoff, and DRL Simulator to replicate real drone physics, letting pilots train their muscle memory before flying actual hardware.

Drone racing sim venues include esports arcades with FPV sim stations, dedicated indoor drone parks with simulator bays, and entertainment centers offering FPV experiences for beginners. The MultiGP Drone Racing League hosts sanctioned events at many of these locations.

Velocidrone

The most widely used FPV training simulator. Used by professional MultiGP and DRL pilots worldwide.

DRL Simulator

Official Drone Racing League simulator. Multiplayer racing with official DRL tracks and drone models.

Indoor Drone Parks

Enclosed facilities with physical gate and obstacle courses — some offer sim stations alongside live flying.

FPV Goggles

DJI Goggles and Walksnail Avatar headsets give immersive 1080p FPV views — many venues supply these.

Drone Racing Sim — FAQ

What controller do I use for FPV drone racing sims?

Most FPV sim venues supply RadioMaster, BetaFPV, or Jumper TX16S controllers. At home, any USB-connected RC transmitter works. Many pilots start with a game controller, but dedicated RC sticks develop proper muscle memory much faster.

How do I get started in drone racing?

Start with a simulator (Velocidrone or Liftoff) to build basic FPV flight skills before touching real hardware. Once you can fly a full gate course consistently in the sim, you'll crash much less when you move to actual drones. Many local clubs offer sim-to-fly programs.

What is MultiGP?

MultiGP is the world's largest FPV drone racing league, with chapters and events across all 50 US states. Many indoor drone parks are affiliated MultiGP chapters and host weekly practice sessions and monthly races open to all skill levels.

Do I need a license to fly FPV drones?

For recreational FPV flying, you need an FAA TRUST certificate (free, 30-minute online test) and must register drones over 0.55 lbs ($5, 3-year registration). Indoor venues at drone parks generally don't require FAA registration for the sim sessions or for flying small indoor-only quads.
